This is especially true when you probe further, question a formulation, or criticize the content of the generated text. In such moments, the AI often responds affirmatively and corrects or qualifies its previous answer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And voil\u00e0: in the end, it agrees with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least most of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If, for example, you insist that the Eiffel Tower is located in Berlin, things get difficult. It&#8217;s not so easy to convince AI of this. In such cases, AI cannot provide a well-founded answer. Instead, it uses the question to estimate which option is likely to be most convincing to users.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study by the <em>Massachusetts Institute of Technology <\/em>in Cambridge shows that AI can generate false content in such situations. It invents a supposedly appropriate answer. In research, this is referred to as hallucinations. And that&#8217;s exactly what can be problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does the Comfort Zone of Affirmation Mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This \u201cyes-man behavior\u201d is particularly noticeable with ChatGPT. The reason for this is that the system is designed to be helpful, polite, and encouraging in almost all interactions. This positive tone is the result of so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/de-de\/think\/topics\/ai-alignment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alignment techniques <\/a>(in particular<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/de-de\/think\/topics\/rlhf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> reinforcement learning from human feedback),<\/a> which train the model to prioritize user satisfaction. The result is an AI assistant that hardly ever contradicts and can even generate factually incorrect content.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So even for the most absurd business idea, such as selling soggy toast, you get the answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe idea is so absurd that it&#8217;s actually good.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Really?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You feel seen and encouraged, and that&#8217;s exactly where the trap lies: you lack the correction, the constructive disruptive fire that really helps you move forward. AI can be enormously useful as a thinking partner. But if it only reflects back agreement, self-criticism becomes a comfort zone \u2013 and questioning your own position becomes rusty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t want AI to agree with me. I want it to be a good sparring partner in my work as a PR consultant.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><em>Laura-Marie Buchholz, Junior Consultant at Mashup Communications<\/em><\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Three Levels of Confirmation Bias in AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Why we still fall for it so readily is no coincidence, but rather psychology. Confirmation bias draws us to what is comfortable. We seek out information that supports our own opinion and dismiss contradictions more easily than we would admit.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And AI, of all things, can further amplify this effect on several levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1. <\/strong>Many models are trained using data generated by humans, such as articles, comments, or click and user numbers. Because humans themselves are prone to confirmation bias, stereotypes, and selective perception, the training data already reflects these distortions. The system adopts them, often without anyone noticing.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2.<\/strong> The alignment mechanisms described above can lead to AI tending to agree, mirror, and confirm rather than remain constructive.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>3. <\/strong>Personalization exacerbates the problem. As soon as AI is adapted to one&#8217;s own style, data, or preferences, a kind of confirmation bias 2.0 emerges. AI becomes a mirror of one&#8217;s own thinking.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is precisely why experts warn that overly approving AI can become a digital echo chamber for one&#8217;s own ideas. In a continuous loop of confirmation, assumptions and beliefs are reflected back again and again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can not only stifle creativity, but also carries greater risks. When constant encouragement becomes a habit, there is no corrective measure: unchecked assumptions remain and misinformation is not corrected. At the same time, our perspective narrows. If AI primarily formulates what fits our own interpretation, other explanations and counterarguments fall by the wayside. This can lead to a single perspective gradually becoming a closed worldview, because alternatives are rarely presented.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What We Can Do to Combat the \u201cYes Man\u201d Mentality of AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The crucial question is how we can use AI in such a way that it does not lull us into complacency. What helps is a different approach and active thinking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Specific tips for combating the \u201cyes-man\u201d mentality of AI:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1. Question your question<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every prompt sets a frame of interpretation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For example, if you ask, \u201cHow can you tell that this campaign has poor storytelling?\u201d then the judgment is already embedded in the prompt. The AI will look for weaknesses and provide you with evidence of them, even if the campaign is actually quite strong and the assessment would be open. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 Tip: <em>Don&#8217;t ask leading questions. Leave room for ambiguity. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2. Recognize your own intention<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI models often do not deliver \u201cthe truth,\u201d but rather the answer that you have suggested to them through the prompt.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1Tip: <em>Consider whether your prompt is aimed at confirmation rather than insight.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>3. Formulate openly<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of: \u201cExamine this campaign to see where its storytelling fails.\u201d Better: \u201cWhat different interpretations does the storytelling in this campaign allow? What story is it probably trying to tell, and how might it be received by different target groups?\u201d <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 Tip: <em>Allow room for interpretation and actively ask for alternatives.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>4. Give AI a role as observer, not judge<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of: \u201cEvaluate this campaign morally.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better: \u201cHow might this campaign affect different viewers, and which parts could polarize or be misunderstood?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 Tip: <em>Formulate your question in such a way that the AI describes and classifies it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>5. Use prompts as guard rails<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you notice that the AI is agreeing too readily or adopting your direction too quickly, you can counteract this with two proven prompt setups. They force the conversation back into balance. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Option A: Custom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ChatGPT\/comments\/1k8vomo\/heres_how_to_get_chatgpt_to_stop_being_an_overly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instructions<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFocus on substance rather than praise. Leave out unnecessary compliments or superficial praise. Critically examine my ideas, question assumptions, identify possible biases, and offer relevant counterarguments. Don&#8217;t shy away from disagreement when it&#8217;s appropriate, and make sure that any agreement is based on comprehensible reasons and evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><em>Prompt to ignore compliments<\/em> <em>and praise from AI<\/em><\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option B: <\/strong>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@sjoerd.tiem\/the-three-experts-prompt-a-simple-way-to-get-better-answers-from-ai-8292dec00b91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three experts<\/a>\u201d prompt in situational chat<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCan you act as three different experts discussing the following topic: [your topic]? Each person should have a different background in [relevant fields]. Have them discuss the pros and cons of [specific question or problem], compare different approaches, and consider practical implications. Make sure they respond to each other and come to a practical conclusion together.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><em>\u201cThree Experts\u201d Prompt<\/em><\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udca1 Tip:<\/strong> Option A is suitable as a permanent setting. Option B is ideal if you consciously want more perspectives when making a decision or analysis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: Get Out of the Hall of Mirrors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who uses AI in their everyday life and work must consciously maintain critical thinking. This means one thing above all else: constantly clarifying what you are reading. Is it information that can be verified? Or is it a logical summary without a direct source? Is it a speculative deduction? Or simply a repetition of terms and ideas that you yourself have previously introduced?     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When these levels are clearly separated, there is room for genuine insight: uncertainty becomes visible, alternatives become more likely, and assumptions can be specifically tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not an appeal against AI, but rather for a certain attitude when dealing with it. Those who do not confuse agreement with quality, actively seek out dissent, and do not automatically make their own perspective the standard, use AI not as an echo chamber, but as a tool.
