“The AI just tells me what I want to hear!”
This thought has probably occurred to anyone who has worked frequently with an AI language model such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. This is especially true when you probe further, question a formulation, or criticize the content of the generated text. In such moments, the AI often responds affirmatively and corrects or qualifies its previous answer.
And voilà: in the end, it agrees with you.
At least most of the time.
If, for example, you insist that the Eiffel Tower is located in Berlin, things get difficult. It’s not so easy to convince AI of this. There is simply too much clear information on this topic on the internet, which was used to train the AI model.
The situation is different when information is missing or contradictory. In such cases, AI cannot provide a well-founded answer. Instead, it uses the question to estimate which option is likely to be most convincing to users.
A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge shows that AI can generate false content in such situations. It invents a supposedly appropriate answer. In research, this is referred to as hallucinations. And that’s exactly what can be problematic.
This “yes-man behavior” is particularly noticeable with ChatGPT. The reason for this is that the system is designed to be helpful, polite, and encouraging in almost all interactions. This positive tone is the result of so-called alignment techniques (in particular reinforcement learning from human feedback), which train the model to prioritize user satisfaction. The result is an AI assistant that hardly ever contradicts and can even generate factually incorrect content.
So even for the most absurd business idea, such as selling soggy toast, you get the answer:
“The idea is so absurd that it’s actually good.”
Really?
You feel seen and encouraged, and that’s exactly where the trap lies: you lack the correction, the constructive disruptive fire that really helps you move forward. AI can be enormously useful as a thinking partner. But if it only reflects back agreement, self-criticism becomes a comfort zone – and questioning your own position becomes rusty.

Why we still fall for it so readily is no coincidence, but rather psychology. Confirmation bias draws us to what is comfortable. We seek out information that supports our own opinion and dismiss contradictions more easily than we would admit.
And AI, of all things, can further amplify this effect on several levels:
This is precisely why experts warn that overly approving AI can become a digital echo chamber for one’s own ideas. In a continuous loop of confirmation, assumptions and beliefs are reflected back again and again.
This can not only stifle creativity, but also carries greater risks. When constant encouragement becomes a habit, there is no corrective measure: unchecked assumptions remain and misinformation is not corrected. At the same time, our perspective narrows. If AI primarily formulates what fits our own interpretation, other explanations and counterarguments fall by the wayside. This can lead to a single perspective gradually becoming a closed worldview, because alternatives are rarely presented.
The crucial question is how we can use AI in such a way that it does not lull us into complacency. What helps is a different approach and active thinking.
Specific tips for combating the “yes-man” mentality of AI:

Don’t shy away from disagreement when it’s appropriate, and make sure that any agreement is based on comprehensible reasons and evidence.”

“Can you act as three different experts discussing the following topic: [your topic]? Each person should have a different background in [relevant fields]. Have them discuss the pros and cons of [specific question or problem], compare different approaches, and consider practical implications. Make sure they respond to each other and come to a practical conclusion together.”

💡 Tip: Option A is suitable as a permanent setting. Option B is ideal if you consciously want more perspectives when making a decision or analysis.
Anyone who uses AI in their everyday life and work must consciously maintain critical thinking. This means one thing above all else: constantly clarifying what you are reading. Is it information that can be verified? Or is it a logical summary without a direct source? Is it a speculative deduction? Or simply a repetition of terms and ideas that you yourself have previously introduced?
When these levels are clearly separated, there is room for genuine insight: uncertainty becomes visible, alternatives become more likely, and assumptions can be specifically tested.
This is not an appeal against AI, but rather for a certain attitude when dealing with it. Those who do not confuse agreement with quality, actively seek out dissent, and do not automatically make their own perspective the standard, use AI not as an echo chamber, but as a tool. And that is precisely when it truly becomes a good sparring partner.
